On June 14, 1982, the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners created Johnson County Fire District 3 after receiving a petition from property owners in the proposed district.

JCFD3 began operations with volunteers and four pieces of equipment. Three of the four pieces of equipment were stored in the old Lexington Township building, which was station no. 1. The other piece of equipment was located at 127th & Gardner Rd., which was station no. 2.

In 1984, JCFD3 purchased property and constructed a new four bay station at 9745 Kill Creek Rd. This building, still known as station no. 1, was completed and occupied in 1985. In 1989, a similar station was constructed to replace station no. 2.

JCFD3 took over Emergency Medical Services from Lexington Township in 1992. At that time, a full time staff was added to station no. 1 to provide first response to all medical emergencies within the District.

JCFD3 currently has over 30 active firefighters, with a mixture of full time and part time employees and indistrict and out of district volunteers. The minimum requirements for the full time and part time staff are EMT-B and Firefighter I certification. The majority of the career personnel carry certifications beyond these minimum requirements. Members attend intra-department training consisting of a monthly EMS training day and a fire services training day. They are also provided opportunities to obtain their Firefighter I, II, and other fire training through the University of Kansas Fire and Rescue Training Institute and other local/regional schools. Several of our volunteers are also First Responder or EMT-B certified.

JCFD3 is overseen by a three person fire board. Kent Dvorak serves as Chairman of the Board, Larry Kroemer as Treasurer, and at-large member A.J. Lang III. Operationally, JCFD3 consists of the following command staff: Terry Zahner, Chief; John Kramer, Assistant Chief; and Mark Billquist, Operations Chief.
